2009-2010 WHYHA Fundraiser Raffle
Frequently Asked Questions

1.      Why is WHYHA doing a raffle this year?
West Hartford Youth Hockey raises money to pay for ice, uniforms, tournaments and officials as well as other association costs (website, postage, etc.) for approximately 20 teams (over 320 children) through fees, sponsorships, and fundraisers. This year the Board opted for the raffle as a way to alleviate some of the upward pressure on fees.

2.      How does the raffle work?
Each family will see an additional $100 fee (per family) on your invoice for the raffle. In the Fall, you will receive a book of 10 tickets. The price of each ticket is $10. Through ticket sales you can offset the upfront cost of the raffle.

3.      Does every family have to participate?
Yes. Every family must participate in the fundraiser. If you have multiple players in the same family, you will only need to sell 10 tickets.  If you do not wish to sell the tickets that is fine, however each family is still responsible for the $100.

4.      With the cost of hockey already high, why are you making us pay another $100?
WHYHA needs to collect a certain amount to run the league each year. Without the raffle, fees would be higher for 2009-2010. By using a fundraiser, part of the cost can be passed to friends, neighbors, family and coworkers if you choose.

5.      Can we return unsold tickets?
No. Since the tickets are paid for up front, unsold tickets belong to the family who received them and will increase your chances of winning the grand prize.

6.      Will the amount we raise directly offset my child’s fees?
If you sell more than 10 tickets, 40% of the revenue for additional tickets sold will be credited to your child(ren)’s account.

7.      I don’t like raffles, why not just raise the fees and be done with it?
Although WHYHA fees are among the lowest of any league in the region, the fees still represent a significant sum of money. While some families can easily afford the fees, others cannot. A raffle allows families to pass on some of the costs through ticket sales. If you don’t want to sell tickets, you may simply keep all 10 tickets and increase your chances of winning the grand prize.

8.      How much does the fundraiser raise?
WHYHA will raise $10,000 with the raffle.

9.      What does the league plan to do with the money?
WHYHA will use the revenue to purchase ice, buy uniforms, pay referees and run the league. The Board is not earmarking the funds for any special purpose.

10. Will participation in the raffle offset my child’s fees?
Not directly unless your child sells more than the 10 ticket family allotment.

11. When and where does the drawing take place?
The drawing will take place at Hockey Night in West Hartford on January 22, 2010. You do not need to be present in order to win.
